FX’s award-winning series American Crime Story is back for season three as it dissects Bill Clinton's presidential scandal. Based on the book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President by Jeffrey Toobin, the show returns tonight, Tuesday, September 7 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
According to FX's plot synopsis, Impeachment: American Crime Story, “examines the national crisis that led to the first impeachment of a U.S. President in over a century. It tells this story through the eyes of the women at the center of the events: Monica Lewinsky (Beanie Feldstein), Linda Tripp (Sarah Paulson), and Paula Jones (Annaleigh Ashford). All three were thrust into the public spotlight during a time of corrosive partisan rancor, shifting sexual politics, and a changing media landscape. The series shows how power lifts some and disposes of others in the halls of our most sacred institutions.”

The Knick actor Clive Owen will take on the role of President Bill Clinton. Golden Globe-winning actress Edie Falco will play first lady Hilary Clinton. Margo Martindale has joined the cast as Lucianne Goldberg, a literary agent, along with actor Billy Eichner, Cobie Smulders, Blair Underwood, Mira Sorvino, Judith Light, and Taran Killam.
Michael Uppendahl, known for his work in Fargo, Mad Men, and American Horror Story, is directing and executive producing the series. He replaced Richard Shepard, who exited the series due to delays in filming, Deadline reported in September 2020.
American Horror Story actor Paulson spoke to Deadline about her upcoming role. “Totally challenging in a way that is very exciting to me as an actor, but it’s not super easy to live inside of it as a human being,” she said. “I think about something that Steve McQueen said to me when we were shooting 12 Years a Slave with him, how important it was for me to stand back from my own judgment of the character and to not sit in the space of judgment, and that it wouldn’t help me play the part, and it wouldn’t help me tell the story,” she said.
Despite the focus of the show this season, Monica Lewinsky has given Impeachment her seal of approval. In fact, she's a producer on the series. She told Vanity Fair about being involved in the project:
I was hesitant and, truthfully, more than a little scared to sign on. But after a lengthy dinner meeting with Ryan [Murphy], I came to understand even more clearly how dedicated he is to giving a voice to the marginalized in all of his brilliant work. I’m privileged to work with him and the other talented people on the team, and I’m privileged to have this opportunity. People have been co-opting and telling my part in this story for decades. In fact, it wasn’t until the past few years that I’ve been able to fully reclaim my narrative; almost 20 years later. But I’m so grateful for the growth we’ve made as a society that allows people like me who have been historically silenced to finally reintroduce my voice to the conversation. This isn’t just a me problem. Powerful people, often men, take advantage of those subordinate to them in myriad ways all the time. Many people will see this as such a story and for that reason, this narrative is one that is, regretfully, evergreen.
